From an environmental standpoint, cellulose insulation is considered more eco-friendly as it is made from recycled materials and has a lower embodied energy compared to fiberglass insulation. However, cellulose insulation can absorb and retain moisture, which may lead to mold or rot issues if exposed to prolonged moisture.
Fiberglass insulation

Fiberglass insulation is composed of fine glass fibers that are tightly woven together. It can be blown in or it is also available in rolls that can be cut and fit into standard wall cavities or ceilings. Fiberglass insulation has a lower R-value per inch compared to cellulose insulation, meaning more inch's will be to be added in order to retain the same thermal barrier. Fiberglass insulation is naturally non-combustible and does not require additional chemical treatments for fire resistance. In terms of environmental impact, fiberglass insulation is made from non-renewable resources (glass) and requires more energy in its manufacturing process but will offer greater benefits in longevity and effectively preserving the energy that is created in your home. Lastly, fiberglass insulation is inherently moisture-resistant and does not promote mold growth. While being more expensive than cellulose the benefits are clearly evident.
Polyurethane insulation

Polyurethane insulation refers to a type of insulation material made from polyurethane foam. It is widely used in various industries and applications due to its excellent thermal properties and versatility. Polyurethane insulation is created by combining two liquid components, an isocyanate and a polyol, which react chemically to form a rigid foam. This foam structure contains a multitude of tiny air cells, which trap air and provide effective thermal insulation. Polyurethane insulation is known for its high thermal resistance, meaning it can significantly reduce heat transfer between two surfaces. This makes it an ideal choice for insulating buildings, refrigeration units, pipes, and other objects where temperature control is crucial. The foam's closed-cell structure also offers excellent moisture resistance, preventing water or vapor from seeping through and compromising its insulating properties. While being highly effective it is not ideal to use in already built residential homes due to its risks of cracking walls and ceilings during it expanding process.
